Are Cowboy Boots with Dresses Cute or Tacky?

From Stephanie Prommer, About.com GuideAugust 3, 2008

Follow me on:

I don't want to rain on Julianne Hough's fashion parade, but I am taking some serious issue with the get-up the 20-year-old wore at an appearance for Wrigley's gum on July 29th.

I understand that Ms. Hough has a new country album out, but I just don't think that her beat-up boots are doing her otherwise-adorable Alice + Olivia dress any favors. To me, I think that a kicky red stiletto or even a quilted ballet flat would've made a much more cohesive statement. Am I wrong here? Is this a good look?

No I agree. I think that boots could have looked okay but not those. If she would have tried a different pair then maybe. But don’t get me wrong, I love her, just not te outfit.

(2) Hannah says:

Nope, you are totally right. I am not a fan of cowboy boots…and those really don’t work with summer dresses too incredibly.

(3) Deborah says:

I think that those boots definately do not go with the dress that she is wearing. I would suggest that maybe a pair of thin strapped sandals.

Okay so first I am VERY COUNTRY and yall city folks are trying to make our boots which we wear on the farm and everything into a FASHION!!!! How stupid r yall city people these will never be “in style” for city slickers like yall!! We i come from we wear cowgirl boots everywhere, school, work, river, and anywhere else! So yea that’s what i gotta say bout that yall

(8) Kassie says:

I think cowboy boots and sundresses are an amazing fashion statment. They are stylish and comfortable. I do think maybe they didnt go with the dress she was wearing.. But if you match it correctly it is super cute. I sing country music and wear them on stage with sundresses. Just add some trendy beads/necklace and some cute earings and curl your hair.. it can be adorable if you make it match and choose the correct excessories.

(9) Taylor says:

okay, I’m from the country(Louisiana) and the town I live in we have a lot of farms and wet lands. Basically all the men wear cowboy boots, because they are comfortable and durable, most women wear them too. Having basically a town full of farms and wetlands calls for cowboy/cowgirl boots. Shoot, I Have many pairs, because I live on a farm, on the weekends and school breaks I go out to work on diff. farms, so I need them. Down here in the south we need the boots, cowboy/cowgirl boots here are kinda like those ugly ugg boots up north, but they ain’t a fashion statement. I agree with the other person that, I hate how yall ppl from other areas are wearing cowboy boots. Country Celeb. Taylor Swift wears cowboy boots and sun dresses(so do I), but Taylor lives in the south she lives in Tennessee. cowboy boots are an adaption to the places they us southerns live, yall northerners just use them like a fashion statement.

All those ciry girls go buy a pair of (fake)COWBOY BOOTS .and think they look hot , and its a fashion , but ay , we farm girls were them to work not to strut around being a stuck up wanna-be , but ay girls ,if you been wereing them cents you were born cheers , but all you city girls. better start kicking them off , and stop being a FAKE !!!!

I definately think boots are a great accsessory with a dress. They’re cute. The old, vintage ones are the best though, the older the better :) .

(12) shelby says:

So i have just been reading all of these comments on this girls outfit and i believe that half of these girls that call city folks “fake” are a little fake themselves. I am from Georgia so i am a country down south girl just like everyone else who is making fun of girls in the city wearing cowgirl boots, but seriously just because people down south wear boots alot more than those up north doesnt mean that you can just adopt boots as only a southern thing. That is just like someone from the north trying to make fun of you because you carry a coach purse. they have just as much right to wear boots as we do to wear ugg boots. they arent “fake” maybe they just like them its not like when you put on boots it screams i raise cows and i live on a farm so why is everyone making a big deal about people from up north wearing boots it doesnt make any sence. and most of you just sound ignorant trying to make fun of someone for what they decide to put on when they walk out of the house regardless of where they live.

(13) emily says:

i agree with shelby in every aspect! i am also from down south in georgia, and we do where boots a lot down here. i personally think that my cowboy boots are durable when working, but also fashionable with sundresses, shorts, skirts and jeans. i think that regardless of where you are from, cowboy boots can be worn as either a fashion staement or just for the heck of it!!

I love it! Love cowboy boots! I’m from Texas! Everyone wears cowboy boots here y’all!

Well i live in Missouri with my mom and everybody has cowgirl/cowboy boots. Also i go in summers to maine to visit my dad and its not like people up north don’t have farms either my dad does and i wear them all the time i also lived in Florida and i wore cowgirl/cowboy boots there too.So my point is that don’t say that boots are just for southeren states cause its not .

(16) Tori says:

Well it might just be my redneck but I think that cowboy boots and dresses are super cute. But I think how she paired them wasn’t good. You should do for a less distressed(how every you spell it)boots with that dress and more of a white or black boot with simple details. That’s my veiw. THey have some great ones on sheplers.com.

(17) kdksjk says:

okay I def think these boots are freekin ugly with that dress, I dont wear cowboy boots myself and I’m from Texas, i recently moved to ohio so you ppl down there sayin that northerners cant wear cowboiy boots are soo wrong because it is sooo freekin country heere so before you go running your mouth make sure you have seen it all hunny

ok i live in new york but i ride all the time at a nearby ranch…we have to wear either riding boots or cowboy boots…i wear my boots everywhere…to teh store to school…etc.. but they dnt work with a dress lyk tht..the dress is more “city”

(19) Lauren says:

I live in Minnesota and I wear mine ALL the time. Mine are not the fake ones either, I ride and train horses aside from attending high school and having a part time job. In the town I live in, most people don’t wear cowboy/cowgirl boots because most if not all are city slickers, I live in a rather large town (200+ are in my graduating class), but it is not unheared of ’round here. They may not work with all dresses, but with summerey looking dresses like Ms. Hugh has on, it works just fine. I think the only type of boot that doesn’t look good AT ALL is the ones that you can buy at Walmart and when the FAKE little city chicks go waltzing around rodeo’s and such in their shirts that show off their tatas, shorts that let their butt hangout and their fake boots that would snap even if they tried any sort of farm work!!

Whoever said us “northern” or “midwesterners” don’t wear cowboy/cowgirl boots must have had a log up their butt! Ofcoarse we wear them. Why wouldn’t we? I mean, have they honestly never been to Montanna, Wyoming, the Dakotas, MINNESOTA, Iowa or Wisconsin in their life? I can garentee that people all over there wear their boots with pride!

(20) Doug from Wyoming says:

A couple points that are annoying me. One, cowboy boots as we know them today originated in the Kansas/Texas area for horsemen moving cattle. Definetly not in the deep south (Georgia and Louisiana) like some seem to imply. Albeit there are some ranchers and cowboys in these states, cowboy boots are inherently a midwestern/western thing. This doesn’t mean that people everywhere can’t wear them. There are rural places in almost every state in the county. Two, when you own/move/or raise cattle you are a rancher….not a farmer. Farmers grow plants….ranchers raise livestock. Lastly, “northerns” must where cowboy boots because the cowboy state (Wyoming) is the coldest/windiest place I have ever been.

(21) kourtnie says:

i think theyre cute..
if they match your personality and where you live.
if youre a sophisticated gal that lives in nyc. dont wear them!
but if youre a country girl that lives in arkansas (like me)
wear them all you want! :)

September 30, 2009 at 8:31 pm
(22) Marcy Peterson says:

I think people should wear whatever they want. Who cares if country people wear cowboy boots or city people do. They are just boots. I personally think that dresses and cowboy boots are really cute. Half of you people will and half of you people won’t think so. If you don’t like it, then don’t wear it. But if someone else does, don’t hate on them for it… That’s all that really needs to be said.

(24) Miranda says:

:) Thanks for everyone who stood up for the north and the midwest!!! I am from Iowa and I recently moved to Virginia because I am in the Navy and I got stationed here. I grew up on a chicken/hog/cattle farm and I wear cowboy boots all the time, simply because I think they’re cute (we wear work boots mostly on the farm). When I came down here people made fun of me because they said I should have to be from the south to wear my boots but I really don’t understand that. After all, it’s called “Western Wear” right?

(25) Just Bought my fisrt Pair says:

I agree with Marcy…I wore mine with A dress that was 3/4 long. I looked cute! They fit perfectly around my calf area. I had to spend alot, but it was well worth the price. They are black with white designs. Next, I plan to buy a tan or camel color pair. They really help when it’s snowing/ice. They really help you while treading through the snow.

(26) Laila says:

Honestly, it truely depends on the way you want to dress. Leave all the people alone that wanna wear something that fits where they live. Just wear what you please, and get over the “fake” issue. In everyone’s eyes your always gonna see someone “fake” that someone else doesn’t see as “fake”. That’s my opinion, and I also live on a farm and wear cowboy boots with my sundress in Wyoming.

(27) Kyley says:

Some of you guys on here are haters. I am from the north and now live in the south. The Southerners make fun of the Northerners for wearing cowgirl/cowboy boots…but the Northerners also make fun of the Southerners for wearing “ugly ughs” (as someone described them down below) no one is “FAKE”. Let people wear what they wanna wear and do their thing. The tag on the boots don’t say “made for northerners/southerners only”. If you FEEL GOOD with what your wearing than do it!! Thats all that matters

(28) allie says:

I got a pair or ropers from skips and I wear them everywhere, with every outfit.I was born in ohio but grew up in florida.we r pretty country in both states,I wear my boots to look sexy for guys;) and I wear my boots to get down and dirty, and some girls try and cut me down but once you think about it who the hell are we to judge anyone els,if the lady wants to wear her boots with the dress then let her if she is confertable and thinks its cute then that’s all that matters, and I wore my boots with a dress many times and I don’t give a damn if people liked it or didn’t.

(29) Kirsten says:

Yes I agree that the pair of cowboy boots look ugly on the some of the dresses but if there is sundresses then the boots are really perfect match for the party and its in fashion these days and giving it more in a fashion look just try to have a pair of good earrings with a matching necklace which gives an amazing look.

I live on a farm and love my cowboy boots! i wear them everywhere and every day. people who arn’t country, don’t be country. people who are country, keep being country. thats who you are and what you like. City people keep wearing your aweful unconfortable high heels!

August 18, 2010 at 6:34 pm
(31) Colette says:

i live in indiana but grew up in southern missiouri and we are pretty country in both places i still have my boots from living in MO and where them all the time here … but id like to advise all you people who are saying its not a fashion statement and that the ”city folks” shouldnt where them. if you tell them that then theyre aloud to say yall shouldnt be wearing jeans because it rarely snows down there.or when you where any thing that comes from the city theyre aloud to call you out on it as long as you do it to them.

(32) A Southern CITY girl says:

First of all I would just like to say I have lived in the south my whole life (louisiana) and i have never even been to a farm before because I live in shreveport which is a decent sized city. I have a pair of those cowboy boots too that i wear with sundresses and stuff and I am certainly not FAKE as some of y’all put it. It doesnt matter at all where you’re from, what kind of work you do, etc. as long as you like the boots and are comfortable. If you dont like them, dont wear them. And to Hannah and Taylor, y’all are the kind of people from the south that gets southerners stereotyped as being stupid and ignorant. Maybe you should spend less time on the “farm” and get to a local community college and brush up on your spelling and grammar. –

(33) Tabitha says:

I live in Oklahoma where we I live in a ranch/farm with cows, horses, pigs, and sheep. Boots keep your feet comfortable and usually dry. They look cute with shorts, jeans, skirts, dresses. I wear mine with pajamas lol. you use what you have. Must agree the “city girls” only buy them to look pretty and they wont ever get dirty which is the point behind why they were created. So I think city girls need to lay off of our “style” and stick to your ugly ass heels the will ruin your feet. :)

(34) Jo says:

Honestly ? really ? this is what this great country has come to ?Who is entitled to wear cowboy/cowgirl boots because of where they live ? Really ? I live in VA..in a small rural town. I wasnt born and bred here but it is home and I love it. This is where I laid down my roots. I have lived in Richmond….and Texas…and everywhere I’ve been I have worn “my style” what I like regardless of the fashion factor or what others thought of my accent ( slow southren draw if you please)and if it defined my brain,my faith, my morals OR whether or not I was geographically correct to wear my cowgirl boots… I wear ‘em cause I love ‘em…dresses or otherwise.and everyone should be able to do so. Honestly y’all…..
