I know I write a column on teen fashion, but every once and a while I like to remind others (and myself) that being 'in style' isn't the most important thing in the whole world - being true to yourself is much more crucial. Teen actress Selena Gomez echoes my sentiment in an interview in this month's J-14 magazine (on newsstands December 7th), and in it she confesses that she's only kissed three boys in her life, and for one of them, she got so wrapped up in who he wanted her to be that she completely lost herself. "I changed everything - my clothes, my hair, the way I talked - everything!" she admits.
Then one day, she had a major wake-up call. "When I started changing the way I acted with my family and friends, that was the trigger," Selena says. Although it took time to embrace who she was again, Selena can now quickly spot when her friends do the same thing. "I feel like girls tend to change themselves for people," Selena says.
I think it's important to remember Selena's advice to stay who you are no matter what your BF or BFF or anyone else thinks is cool, k?

Yeah! Don’t ever change yourself for a guy! If he doesn’t like you the way you are, then he doesn’t really like you!
btw… i’m 18, never kissed any guy and I have a boyfriend
When I read the first paragraph, I thought finally there is this person out here ,telling us that we should be ourselves and “being ‘in style’ isn’t the most important thing in the whole world”. And yet all I see in this teen fashion section are celebrities’ styles, fashion trends today, etc…
So what is your point then? Are we changing ourselves afterall? If you didn’t care about being ‘in-style’, why are you commenting on celebrities’ fashion and any thing similar anyway?
I would recommend any teenager especially teenage girl out there like me (I’m 16) who came to this website

for finding some security instead of being more and more insecure inside by all these trends or whatever the media has been trying to fit us in!
I think that the latest trends become trends because it shows the tastes and personalities of the current generation. Wearing them doesn’t mean your not ‘being yourself” because fashion always correlates with what the people want to wear.
But this doesn’t mean everybody should wear the latest trends (and since when did EVERYBODY wear the latest trends, there are always people who prefer not to) because wearing them though your not comfortable is not ‘being yourself’. So what if your tastes or likes do not coincide with what the others do, if that were the case, wouldn’t the world be so bland?
