I just had one of those 'pinch me' days: I recently met Maureen Kelly, founder of tarte Cosmetics, in her company's NYC office for a mini tenth birthday event!
I have been a fan of the brand for years, so I was admittedly a little nervous going in. But Maureen is sooo normal and cool, and she told us that she wasn't formally trained in beauty when she started; she was a psychology major and decided to form her own makeup company - out of her one-bedroom apartment, no less - when she couldn't find beauty products that she liked. Maureen explained that her goal was to create functional, multi-use items that were easy to apply and included natural, safe ingredients.
Probably most recognized for its eco-friendliness and fabulous Cheek Stain (pictured, above), the brand has expanded way beyond color cosmetics to include items like mascara, tinted moisturizer and self-tanner. One of the newest products that just came out is the emphasEYES eye shadow and liner, which Maureen said is made with clay from the Amazon. The amazing thing about this product is that it's water AND oil proof - and Maureen actually tested it on her hand (pictured, below) by rubbing olive oil over a mark she drew on herself. It was crazy.
I have a feeling that to celebrate the 10th year of the brand, the gang at tarte will be introducing some new and limited-edition products. I guess we'll just have to wait and see what comes out this fall, won't we? : )
