Interview with Fashion Designer Gabby Applegate

From , former About.com Guide

Gabby Applegate is a fantastically talented Los Angeles-based designer being compared to the likes of Anne Demeulemeester and Gareth Pugh - and she's only 20 years old! The creator of namesake collection Gabby Applegate (as well as Witches by Gabby Applegate before that), Gabby's clothes are favorites among the young and fashionable set, and Mischa Barton is one of the line's fans. Here is an interview with designer Gabby Applegate:

How Did You Get Started Designing?

Gabby: I have always been into fashion. I started designing because I wanted to create pieces of clothing that I wanted in my own closet. I have always known what I want from fashion and a lot of times it just wasn't out there yet. Now I can just wear the clothing I design.

What Inspires or Influences Your Design Process?

A model wearing Gabby Applegate.

People influence me a lot. The people I hang out with, or even people on the street. Also music and scenery inspire me.

Is Being Young An Advantage or Disadvantage in Fashion?

I think my age goes both ways. I think it helps because I'm not 'jaded' by the fashion industry yet. But I think it can be bad because people won't take me seriously sometimes either.

Who Would You Most Like to Dress in Your Designs?

I love dressing musicians...they're so creative and have this powerful energy to them I love.

What Are Your Goals in the Next 5 Years As a Designer?

In the next 5 years I would love to be able to design for a big design house and also be able to have my line as my creative outlet.

Do You Have Any Advice for Teens that Would Like to Become Designers?

My advice for other teens would be to just stick with it. It can get tiring and hard but it's worth everything.
