Hot Trend: Mad for Plaid

By , About.com Guide

Plaid isn't just for prepsters anymore – the traditional pattern is a major trend this season and has made its way on to handbags, hair accessories and even jewelry! Depending on how much you like to push the envelope, you can splash out and wear a boldly patterned coat, or just dip your toe into the water with an understated pair of earrings. Either way, please keep your plaid pieces limited to one per outfit; any more and you'll go overboard!

Fred Flare "Tartan Headband" in Red, $10

Great for adding the finishing touch to a simple outfit, this 2-inch wide headband will add gloss to your look in a flash. It also comes in a blue version if you're not so hot on red.

M. Haskell "Plaid Hoop Earrings," $15

For a no-risk way to try the plaid trend, just throw on these pierced hoop earrings wrapped in ribbon! I think they're too cute for words.

Alloy "Plaid Frame Bag" in Multi, $34.50

Who cares if you only carry this felt bag until next year – at this price, it's not a problem! You'll make anything from jeans to a little black dress look fun with this carryall.

Abercrombie & Fitch "Mandy" Pajama Pants in Cream, $39.50

Lazy Sundays are the best, and now you can lounge in style! These 100% cotton pajama pants with a low-rise fit are so incredibly soft, you'll never want to take them off.

Converse "Chuck Taylor All Star Plaid" in Milk/Red/Plaid, $46.99

Every girl should have at least one pair of Chuck Taylors in her closet (I can tell you honestly that most all of the fashion editors I know wear them), and why not start with these? Pair them with a little T-Shirt dress if you’re feeling really funky.

Gabriella Rocha "Tall Plaid" Rain Boot in Red Multi, $49.95

You might actually look forward to when it rains if you have these adorable wellies. Made out of 100% rubber with a net lining inside, these babies are fully waterproof, so go ahead and splash around in those puddles!

Ben Sherman "Wanda V-Neck Top" in Cardinal Red Marl, $59

As soft as your favorite basic tee only way cooler, this cotton and polyester blend top has tiny button accents and an adorable keyhole that ties in the back.

Roxy "Hide and Seek" Trench Coat in Pewter, $68.99

Not so over-the-top, this chic trench has a muted palette that will look stylish season after season. The belt is great for showing off the waistline, and the coat is even machine washable, too!

J. Crew "Sparkle Plaid Margaret Shirt" in Red Holly, $78

Perfect for a holiday party, this slightly sheer cotton blouse has a hint of gold sparkle that adds a festive touch. The mini ruffles down the front also give it a sweet girlie feel.

Triple 5 Soul "Nippon Vest" in Charcoal Plaid, $199

Great for hitting the slopes or just walking to school, this insulated wool vest has a snazzy zip-off hood complete with fur trim. It's so darn stylish it might just be worth the splurge!
