Hot Trend: Eco-Friendly Fashion

By , About.com Guide

I've always been all for Earth Day and recycling, but when it came to eco-minded fashion, there just weren't many options of items that were actually cute enough for me to want to wear. Well, this season that's all changed, so here are ten of my favorite pieces that you'll feel good about spending your money on!

Bamboosa "Bamboo Ankle Socks" in Purely Natural, $7

These socks blow my mind: They're made of 85% real bamboo! Not only that, I guess bamboo contains a natural odor-eating ingredient, so these babies are perfect for hitting the gym!

Gaiam "Kashvi Necklace," $10

First of all, the price of this necklace is crazily low, and that in itself is a feat. But what I really love is that it's made by artisans in India for fair living wages. The Indian translation of Kashvi is "shining," and hopefully that's just how you'll feel when you wear this glass and mother-of-pearl bauble!

Betsey Carr "Pretty Poppy Bobby Pins," $12 for Set of Two

Not only completely adorable, these cutesy hair pins are handmade in North Carolina by Betsey Carr, who creates each flower from pieces of polyester blouses that she finds in thrift stores. Since she's using vintage and found pieces for her pins, she's kinda helping to reduce consumption of new materials!

Gecko Trader "Market Bag," $27

These incredibly cool-looking totes are made from discarded rice bags that are found in Vietnam. The rice bags are collected, brought to Cambodia, cleaned and stitched into these totes. Since they're from all different rice bags, every 18.5-inch-tall style is a one-of-a-kind. How awesome is that?

Ecoist "Chica Rosa" Clutch in Silver, $38

Glittery enough to wear for a night out, this 8-inch-long silver metallic clutch is actually made out of recycled aluminum pop-tops! The perfect size to hold your keys, a cell phone, cash and lipstick, each bag is hand-crocheted and adorned with 200 tabs. Another cool feature: For every handbag sold at the website Ecoist.com, the company plants a tree!

Lindsay Jo Holmes "Skateboard Earrings," $48

For all you skater girls, these fun earrings are created from old and damaged skateboards! One side shows off the grain of the board's maple wood, while the other side flaunts the scratched-up deck. Each pair of the 2.75-inch-long hoops is unique, so you never know what cool artwork you're gonna get! And since I'm allergic to nickel, I'm all about the surgical steel ear wires.

Levi’s "Eco Hi-Rise Skinny Jeans" in Midnight Sheen, $78

Dark, skinny jeans are still in style this season, so what better way to wear the trend than with organically-grown cotton? Levi's added a touch of stretch so they still fit like a dream, and there's even green stitching on each pair. Love 'em!

Ecoganik "Jersey Hoody Dress" in Dark Rose, $108

Made right in Southern California, this comfy jersey dress is bound to become your go-to staple. It's made of 100% organic, pesticide-free cotton, which is another reason to want it!

Loyale "Tularosa Dress" in Green, $160

Another amazing style constructed of bamboo, this fabulously flowy frock is made in good 'ol New York City. I think it'll be amazing over a turtleneck and tights in the winter, and then with flip-flops in warmer weather.

El Naturalista "Duna Boot" in Brown, $259.95

This boot is a splurge, but I think it's worth it. Crafted in Spain, the leather is treated with river stones, which makes it soft and flexible for walking. Not only that, but there are removable insoles inside the 2.5-inch-heeled boots that are made of recycled cork!
