Top 6 Basic Wardrobe Pieces

By , About.com Guide

Trends and 'it' bags come and go, but there are some fashion items that remain must-haves year after year. And although it's great to experiment with your style, it's also a smart idea to have a foundation of timeless pieces in your wardrobe to rely on. Here are six classic outfit elements that every girl should have in her closet to build from. And it's OK to invest a little bit more on these, because you'll be able to wear them practically forever!

1. Button-Down White Shirt

A simple, unadorned cotton oxford shirt looks casually chic with jeans on the weekend but can also be dressed up with black pants and fabulous jewelry. Just look for a blouse that is well made (check the buttons to see if they seem secure) and that fits you without pulling or gaping open across the bust.

2. Trench Coat

A classic trench may seem a little stuffy for a teen, but nowadays they're being made in slimmer cuts and more wearable fabrics! They're a great buy in either tan or black, because they can double as evening jackets over party dresses. A version with a removable lining will even work from Spring through to Winter!

3. Printed Scarf

No matter if you like crazy Pucci prints or dainty florals, a large printed scarf is an absolute must. You can tie it in your hair like Nicole Richie does, or you can hang it on your purse handle for a preppy touch. And of course, you can also wrap it around your neck in a ton of different ways!

4. Straight-Leg Jeans in a Dark Blue Wash

Even though super-skinnies and ultra-wide flares are hot right now, a pair of simple straight jeans in a clean, dark wash are the best buy. They're incredibly flattering on just about every body type, and are also dressy enough to wear out at night with a pretty little top.

5. Black Cocktail Dress

Even if you don't have anywhere fabulous to go, you should have a great-fitting black dress in your closet in case you get a last-minute invite! A simple wrap style (like Diane von Furstenberg is famous for) is a great bet, as is anything slightly above the knee that you feel gorgeous in!

6. High-Heeled Pumps

It may seem obvious, but having one amazing pair of high-heeled pumps is a great idea. Look for some with heels at least around 2-inches tall that you feel comfortable standing in, and make sure that you can actually walk around in them with confidence.
