Heelys for Grown-Ups?

From Stephanie Prommer, About.com GuideMarch 3, 2009

I'm sure you have seen a bazillion kids out there sporting Heelys - or maybe your little siblings even have some - but I was astounded to find out that the roller skating sneakers are also available in adult sizes!

They basically look exactly like the children's versions, like this $49.99 Pixie style. I am personally not coordinated enough to wear these without falling on my face, but I'm not sure that I would want to, either. What do you think? Are adult Heelys cool or crazy?

Nice shoes. I like the shape and the color combination of white and purle or pink. If matching scarves, It would be perfect in the spring or summer now.

How stupid. I think they are clunky and heavy, and not cute or stylish at all. If you like the color, go and get a cute pair of sandles and matching sundress for the spring. You could NOT pay me to wear those.

I’m 28 years old and have two kids…a girl 8 and a boy 4…I bought a pair of heelys for myself 2 ago for recreation and absoluely love them…my daughter was so fasinated by how I was able to skate around with such ease she’s been dying for a pair herself…but I couldn’t find any in her size…so for her sake I put them alway till her feet grew…I got her a pair for Christmas this year and can’t wait till we can go out and have some fun together…but my first lesson to her is safety and responsibility…just like with any recreational sport, there are always risks….of course I’ve fallen and luckly no injuries…only hurt my pride…lol…but Ive only fallen once with the heelys…I was new to them and I was getting cocky…my mistake not the shoes….I’ve enjoyed skating ever since I was a child and have tried it all…and truthfully I have found that heelys are probably the safest for children than roller skates, blades, and boards….if you feel a fall coming on just simply plant your toes(not your heels, dur!) down on the ground and take a step or two(give or take)…To parents who worry about their children and heelys please note: it’s ur responsibility to teach and fore-warn your kids about the risks and responsibilities that come with them…I’ve heard the many horror stories….and I believe most of it is the lack of disipline and communication on the parents behalf…if your child can’t seem to practice safety and responsibility after you have set down the rules…take the darn things away and toss them in the trash, regardless of your childs objectons… Ur the parent remember that!!!….and also safety gear is a plus…I know I’m a hypocrite when I say that because I fail to wear it myself but it’s at my own risk there…but Im not exactly an amature either…but I did get my own daughter knee pads and elbow pads…and yes she will wear them until I’m comfortable with her skating abilities…I’m a sporty type of mom and minor cuts and scrapes or an ocassional scar is apart of life…but I believe that even walking down your average street holds it’s dangers…just remember to be properly prepared when doing any kind of recreational activity…I once saw a mother buy her child a skateboard of her young childs choosing(a board made for flat surfaces only!) and by chance saw them both an hour later at a skate park…the child was under dressed for skating and the parent didn’t do any reseach prior to the childs interest in the sport…they unwrapped the board and the kid went straight to the ramp…before I or my husband could holler at the kid and parent the kid went down the ramp…the kids knees were locked straight just like any other newbie…and the board went right out from under the kid and the kid’s unprotected head smacked the pavement…the parent was absolutely shocked and the kid was screaming in pain…they threw the board in the trash before they left…but it’s things like that that ruin it for the rest of us…I feel for the kid but I was furious at the parent…it’s not rocket science to realize to take proper precations first!!!….notice I bought a pair of heelys for myself to test drive before I made an attempt to get some for my kid…but if ur not able to do so urself teach them to be careful enough to take it easy at first and take baby steps!!…it takes some practice to get the hang of skating in heelys…i started in my small living room with hard wood floors…start in a small space to give yourself the idea to start out slow and careful…after awhile with success move up one step at a time….and choose your scene with care and consideration….don’t skate in crowded areas or in places that don’t allow it….u might not get hurt but someone else might due to ur selfishness…or u might get hurt because u didn’t pick a safe area…please people don’t ruin it for the rest of us by being stupid…..

Yes i do think that is true parents should be more responsible. I think the kids should be careful and take little steps at a time but if you watch your children and know that they have the hang at it you should let htem have some but dont just let them go into stores and ride them aroun willy nilly!!!
